The Virtual Learning Tools project will be offering a series of online courses through its Virtual Classroom. The Virtual Classroom is a purely online based distance learning environment designed with the special requirements of northern rural residents in mind, facilitating higher education in and about the Arctic by allowing interactive participation to University of the Arctic courses through the internet.

A pilot course was run between January 10 - April 10, 2011 called Adaptation to Globalisation in the Arctic: The Case of Reindeer Husbandry, developed by UArctic EALÁT Institute for Circumpolar Reindeer Husbandry and the Sámi University College in collaboration with Thule Institute, University of Oulu, Finland.

Career Development Tools

The Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) is currently working to develop a webinar series in order to assist early career polar scientists with their career development goals. This online lecture series is a joint effort between APECS, US NSF ARCSS Thermokarst Project, and the University of Canterbury.

To view the APECS Career Development Webinar Series, please click HERE

One of the main objectives of APECS has from the beginning been the creation of a continuum of knowledge in polar and cryospheric research. To faciliatate knowledge sharing between generations and different level scientists, it has created a forum of senior researchers and professionals that have served as mentors for their many activities. The key role played by mentors within APECS is sharing their knowledge and insights with APECS members through personal communication with early-career researchers or through presentations/participation in mentor panel discussions, career development workshop and APECS meetings/symposia.
